The most congested areas of the city of Bogotá are monitored by Sensefields

The traffic flow on the main accesses of the city of Bogotá, a city with heavy congestion problems, is now running smoothly thanks to Sensefields City Traffic Data Collection solution applied to facilitate hassle-free entry and exit to the city.

Ranking among the world’s most traffic congested cities, the colombian capital, Bogotá, suffers from serious mobility problems caused by traffic jams all around the city. Lack of bus priority lanes and limited subway lines make the transport system a problematic ecosystem for the 8 million habitats of the city.


In particular, the main accesses to the south, west, north-west and north areas of the city of Bogotá used to be some of the most congested areas of the entire city. The traffic jams problems, mainly during the peak hours, caused many incidents that made the drive experience in and out of the city even worse increasing pollution levels and user discomfort.


As a result, the Secretary of Mobility of Bogotá (SDM – Secretaría Distrital de Movilidad) selected to monitor the most conflictive motorways, whose number of lanes varies from two to four, in order to decongest the problematic zones – something that would optimise mobility in the entire city of Bogotá.


The project developed by the District Secretary of Mobility (SDM) of the city of Bogotá consisted of three parts:


  • Merging vehicle traffic data including counting, vehicle classification, speeds and travel times
  • Providing data about bicycle mobility and
  • Monitoring traffic flow problems reported by platform users and traffic agents, such as accidents, demonstrations, civil works etc.


The combined data would have to ensure mobility enhancement and CO2 emissions levels reduction by informing the network users about the real-time conditions of the actual traffic landscape through Variable Signal Messages (VMS).  Traffic regulation in the affected areas, as well as communication of the levels of traffic jams and alternative routes would be some of the main system solutions.


Having successfully being applied in a series of smart mobility applications worldwide, Sensefields traffic management intelligence was selected as the ideal solution thanks to the very high accuracy rate that is over 99.5%, the quick installation and the easy integration with local traffic management systems.


Sensefields wireless magnetic sensors were easily and quickly installed transmitting real-time traffic flow information to Sensefields Data Processing Station – DPS that processes and analyses the collected data providing information ensuring a series of advantages:


  • Management of more than 75,000 vehicles a day through the implementation of more than 200 sensors to obtain data on intensity, speed, lengths and occupancy levels
  • Real-time transmission to an open mobility data management platform, which integrates traffic data, incidents, relative data on bicycle mobility and destination origin matrices
  • Operation and maintenance of the solution through the platform developed by Sensefields, Fastrack
  • Autonomous solution with equipment powered by solar panel sending data via 3G

From the moment of the installation of the equipment, the Secretary of Mobility of Bogotá has the capacity to analyze the traffic flow in each one of the intersections in real time and as a result even though the vehicular intensity in the monitored areas has increased, the congestion rates as well as the CO2 emission levels have been reduced.
