A smart airport for a smart city is gradually becoming a reality

Being one of the busiest airports worldwide with more than 47 million passengers in 2017, ‘El Prat’ of Barcelona, has now absolute control of its premises´traffic parameters:


Real-time quantity, type and speed of the vehicles that access or leave the terminals, as well as, daily and historical data, graphs, statistics and reports that give clear insights about the traffic flow based on lane, time, terminal and type of vehicle are accurately measured thanks to Sensefields wireless magnetic technology.


Analysis, monitoring and regulation of the traffic flow at both terminals of Barcelona Airport – El Prat, situated 13km (8 miles) from one of the most visited cities in the world, were the main challenges of the airport operator,  AENA – Spanish Airports and Air Navigation: There was a fundamental need for traffic management improvement to enhance operations effectiveness, as well as, to provide a better visitor experience to all its inbound and outbound guests.


The desired solution should identify both the number of vehicles that access the airport and the nature of each one of them, being trucks, vans, buses, cars or motorcycles providing reliable real-time information, historical reports and statistics about the all private vehicles, taxis or mobility service provider cars (MSP) that have passed through each one of the airport zones. Mobility parameters such as parking times and real-time speed data were required  in order to optimise the management of traffic and parking operations on the entire airport premises.


Sensefields intelligent traffic management system was considered as the ideal solution thanks to its capability to offer an accuracy rate higher than 99.5%. Sensefields wireless magnetic sensors were easily and quickly installed transmitting real-time traffic flow information to Sensefields Data Processing Station – DPS sending the collected and processed data to Sensefields Collector Server that is incorporated into t the airport’s control system  SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition).

Since more than 50.000 vehicles are now successfully managed per day by both accessing and departing to and from El Part – a number estimated with an accuracy rate higher than 99.5% – Sensefields solution is expected to reduce congestion outside the terminals, ensure road safety and maintain continuous taxi availability for a unique service experience from the very first moment passengers arrive in Barcelona.
